Here at Silver Mushroom, we undeniably have autumn desserts on our minds. Last week we shared our Fall Spiced White Chocolate NYC Cookies, and this week we have a quintessentially British classic. The humble crumble. This spiced pear and blackberry crumble recipe is one of the best autumn desserts when you're craving a hot pudding to warm the soul. It is, after all, pudding season.
The beauty in this pear and blackberry crumble recipe is in it's simplicity. 6 ingredients, a couple of spices, and 20 minutes of prep. We'd love to say hours of delicious crumble, but it almost definitely won't last so long.
Ingredients
Crumble Topping
- 110g cubed, softened butter
- 180g plain flour (can substitute with gluten-free flour)
- 110g demerara sugar
- 1 tsp nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger (optional)
Crumble Filling
- 5 seasonal pears, peeled
- 150g caster sugar
- 300g blackberries (can be frozen)
How to Make Your Pear and Blackberry Crumble
- Preheat your oven to 180°C fan, 200°C normal.
- In a large bowl, add the butter and flour, and rub together between your fingertips. Once the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, add the demerara sugar and mix well once again.
- Place your peeled pears in a pan, cover them with water, and add 50g of the caster sugar. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 10-12 minutes or until the pears are soft.
- Once the pears are tender, drain well and set aside. Once the pears have cooled enough, remove the cores and shop the flesh into small slices.
- Now it's time to construct your pear and blackcurrant crumble! In an ovenproof pie dish or baking dish, spoon in a third of the pears in an even layer. Add a third of the blackberries on top, and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of caster sugar. Repeat this process until you've used all the pears, blackberries and sugar.
- Evenly distribute the crumble topping over, ready for baking.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until your pear and blackberry crumble is beautifully golden brown and bubbly.
