How to Make the Most Of Twixmas This Year

Posted by Maisie Yerkess on

As we make it to this point in the year, the term Twixmas floats around here and there. Twixmas parties, Twixmas get-aways, and Twixmas sales. But, what is Twixmas? It’s that glorious period between Christmas and New Year where time itself doesn’t really exist at all.

What does this period mean to you, and how do you usually feel? Exhausted from the Christmas party after Christmas party? Still on a high from winning all the festive games? Or are you working, or preparing for the new year at this time?

Regardless of how you usually spend it, here are some Silver Mushroom suggestions to make the most of your Twixmas this year:

Enjoy Something that you Promised you’d do in December

Spiced NYC Cookies

We’re all guilty of saying ‘This December I will…’, or ‘this Christmas I’d love to…’, and never getting around to any of it. Lists of recipes unmade, your favourite festive films unwatched, and new countryside walks left un-explored. We all know that Christmas sneaks up out of nowhere. The days speed up, and before you know it, you’re well into January.

So, take a step back, slow down, and make time for the things you wish you did. It’s still the 12 days of Christmas, after all! We won’t judge you for watching The Grinch after Christmas. Particularly if you have a day or two off work, you have no excuse to finally make the most of it. How about rustling up some sweet treats to pass around to New Years guests? Our Spiced White Chocolate NYC Cookies are the perfect Twixmas treat.

Simply... Relax

The festive period whilst exciting, is without doubt absolutely exhausting. Your social battery is teetering on empty, and you will be ready to switch off for a little while. If you’re lucky enough to have the time off work to do so, spend your time relaxing and rejuvenating. This way you’ll be back on full energy for New Years Eve. Or the new year ahead, of course.

Snuggle up in your favourite blanket in front of the fire with a book or your favourite TV show. Twixmas TV is often full of reruns and Christmas specials that you watch every year, but love them all the same. You may have an exciting pile of new books from Santa’s deliveries, or you may just want to sit and reminisce with your loved ones about the most joyous moments from the festive season thus far.

Take your time to focus on self-care. Some might spend a few days alcohol (and socialising) free, others may choose to spend relaxing time with their family. Self-care might also mean face masks, nail painting, and relaxing preparation to look glitz and glam on New Years Eve. Or prioritising time spent outside with your furry friend. No matter what ‘self-care’ means to you, make time for it this Twixmas, so you can go into the new year with a new lease of life.

Eat leftovers and party food

At our house during the week before Christmas we’re not allowed to eat anything in the fridge, because it’s reserved for the big dinner. Then after Christmas, we have nothing in the fridge to eat but leftovers. And how glorious that is. You finally get to eat it all to your heart's content.

Make the most of your leftovers with Christmas dinner sandwiches every day, or spruce them up into new recipes. Either way, they’re sure to be delicious, and one of my favourite parts of Twixmas.

Curate a Cosy Home to Bring in the New Year

Whilst we all associate Christmas with winter, the season has hardly even begun. Chilly evenings and days wrapped up are ahead, and nothing makes these days feel warmer than a cosy home to come back to.

Think snuggly textiles - plush cushions to sink into, warm blankets to cocoon into, and maybe even a new bedding set? Just as the old saying goes, ‘New Year, new bedding’. Perhaps we have it mixed up, but it sounds right to us.

Next, a cosy home can truly not exist without a roaring fire. They simply go hand in hand. Stock up on logs, and have them ready in your log basket besides the fireplace. The last thing you need is to be heading outside in the cold to collect fresh logs.

Finally, fill your home with delicious winter scents. Imagine coming home from a cold walk into the aroma of hot mulled cider, or freshly baked pumpkin pie. With these finishing touches, your home is sure to feel like a welcoming haven this Twixmas.

Vision board for 2025

Last but not least, it might be time to start thinking about the new year. I’m sure there’s already one or two things on your mind that you’ve said, ‘I’ll start in the new year’. Well, the new year is almost upon us.

One way to get your 2025 plans, hopes and new habits in order is through creating a vision board. You can fill your vision board with the trips you’re dreaming about, home renovations, activities you can’t wait to try out, or New Year’s Resolutions you hope to achieve. Being able to see all these ideas visually, can organise them and ensure that they seem exciting, rather than something to worry about!

Have a Very Merry Twixmas

Finally, the most important thing about Twixmas is finding a way to make it the most fulfilling, magical time of year. Whether that be spent in peaceful solitude, along with your nearest and dearest, or filled with parties and celebration. It has every potential to be a beautiful time of year, in which for just a few days, you can forget what day it is.
